Evaluation Question 1: (Anna)

In what ways does your media product, use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

conventions of real rap media products:
Our music video contains our title at the start of it, which is similar to this rap video of 'Chris brown' 'Faithful'. They had put their name of the song on the front with a font which matches the genre of the video e.g. Chris browns video on the right shows a more futuristic edge to the video due to the titles font being sharp and white which contrasts the background of black. in comparison to our titles where we have an effect of graffiti on it and its consisting the bright colours in the background and we convey an effect of being laid back and a skater atmosphere with the background.

we have challenged conventions of rap genre because I've researched many rap videos and none give more than one credit to the creators, they mention the rappers such as 'Nikki Minaj' and song titles however thats the most visuals rap videos include which is why we included more credits to make the establishing shots more interesting rather than audiences viewing plain screen of graffiti.

based on rap music videos i have noticed that we conform to the rap genre this is because we included production logos which will make us noticeable on who had created it, this image is a synergistic logo which would have been presented in our digipak, magazine advert and music video. This logo is similar to other rap logos such as 'Lil uzi vert' on the right which has his production logo of LiluziverT which is his production company.

Our production company is shown right after the logo is presented. This is to create a synergistic link between the visual image and the meaning to it. We used this to show our production company and who is made by. This is similarly presented in 'Migos' song where he has directed by shown which gives gratitude to the producer and editor crew.

we conformed to the conventions of rap videos using and including text which shows who its directed by however we challenge it by placing it in the end of our video this is because our songs build up is short and if audiences would read the text they wouldn't focus on the words which are rapped about.

music videos similar to ours based on style, narrative and genre:

comparing these clips from our video to the real rapper video, i think we included the same eye contact which our rappers are showing to the camera this engages the audience as it seems as if the rapper is talking to us. dance moves and dancing is present as well which creates a focus on the rapper.

Sage The Gemini - Red Nose
the transitions shows our inspiration of having bars on the screen which separates and leads to other scenes. the editing is more complex than for pop songs in our rap video there's more transitions present on screen which make the video more visual.

YGIF MUSIC VID (MEDIA PROJECT)

we have included hand gestures and body language which emphasises what the rappers are rapping about. our rapper is pointing to a girl which is what hes rapping about, hes also putting his hand next to his eyes to show how hes looking for girls

This is similarly with the rap video here.hes rapping about money and how hes rich which is why hes shaking his hands to show a gesture of him being rich and throwing the money.

YGIF MUSIC VID (MEDIA PROJECT)
Sage The Gemini - Red Nose we challenge rap videos with our usage of female characters, we included female characters however we did not sexualise them. we wanted to portray women with dignity rather than show off their body this is because teens would watch this and by including shaking bums and breasts into the camera will limit our audience range.

Sage The Gemini - Red Nose
here we have images of the rapper dancing and breaking the 4th wall by looking at the camera and making contact with us as an audience. he looking at the camera in the real rap video to our left and compared to ours we show how the rapper is spinning the camera around to focus the audience on something else.

Magazine Advert conventions:
real magazine advert conventions are seen similar to each other, the conventions are that the rapper is the largest and normally placed  in the 2/3 of the rule of third. The background is always seen darker and the rapper is emerging form the dark background. This idea is portrayed in the magazine adverts below made by 2pac, Jay-z and Drake. these magazine adverts have a dark background with white writing and another dominant colour emerging from the adverts e.g. 2pac has orange which contrasts the dark colours of black and white.

based on these magazine adverts and ours we can see that we have included some conventions of rap genre magazine adverts such as including dark colours for the primary background we used grey and the adverts above show darker colours like black.

  • main convention we portrayed in our magazine advert is that the main character(rapper) is present in the shot, he's visible and his face is easily recognisable with his name e.g. Chis yonge is written on top and audiences can infer that its him based on him being in the image. This is similar to real magazine adverts such as Jay-Z which shows a close up on his face  which shows his identity as a rapper
  • we included conventions of having the rappers name the biggest and boldest, in all these magazine adverts shown they show the main rappers name in bold as well as the tile name as well which is what we did, are added and made the rappers name and title 'TGIF' as bold. we did this because it will catch the audiences eyes if the writing is in bold
  • We developed and challenged conventions of rap magazine adverts because the release date is normally on the bottom as shown on Jay-Z  magazine advert however we though that the bottom of the advert is mostly overlooked which is why we added it in the middle of the screen because the main focus is the Bart Simpson which means that audiences will read around it
  • we challenged conventions of rap magazine adverts because we included Bart Simpson a fictional character on our advert, this fictional character makes our audiences of 12-24yr olds to focus on this as this cartoon is known for its dark humour which is why audiences will  be appealed to this advert due to the main character being brighter than the background
  • we conformed to conventions as drakes magazine adverts shows production companies and institutional links which we have included as well with our spartan logo on bottom left
  • drakes magazine advert shows his website where you can find information about him, we similarity added that aspect where it would take you to our artist 'Chris yonge' page.
  • we included the convention of having social media links, we included spotify and itunes to show the availability of our song for audiences to watch and listen.
  • we used synergy in our magazine advert as in our graffiti location we took stills of our rapper in front of the graffiti. the picture is of Bart Simpson which audiences can interpret as they can associate our rapper with that image.
  • we challenged conventions as we included 5 star ratings which occurs in movies however we decided to add this into our magazine advert as it will make the audiences aware that he's an upcoming rapper that everyone will talk about which is why we included such words and ratings to show the audiences that 'they will be talking about this song soon'
  • overall we have included all the conventions that rap magazine adverts include. We had our rapper present, the title being bold and a production logo being made.

Digipak conventions:
Image result for real digipakson my blog you can see the digipak conventions which i have previously researched, the conventions consisted of a spine, front back and inner panels which link to each other, in our digipak that is what we aimed to do.

In our digipak we included all the aspects which we needed to make it as realistic and as similar to real music digipaks. With the previous research on digipak i was able to add aspects which amen a digipak appealing and linking go the rap genre which is why we had a similar image of graffiti being shown throughout the back and front of digipak.

Here are examples of real rap digipaks which show the main rapper in the front cover and back and in the booklet which is attached. The inside booklet included the songs and a description of the song  which will give a bigger insight on what the songs would be about, the booklet is more for giving insight on what is inside and what songs would come up.  The 50 cent digipak shows a synergistic link as both images are showing red and him wearing the same clothes

how our digipak conforms to conventions of digipaks:
  • Net type:we included a conventional digipak net we chose to have a 6 net digipak. this is because we are able to have more panels inside to include our booklet with song lyrics and we are able to add images which link to the artist such as graffiti.
  • Eye catching image: our main image and synergistic link is the idea of graffiti and the image of bart simpson. this image is what most digipaks inlcude either by having the main rapper as teh central image or a cartoon or design which will catch the audiences eye
  • Titles: we have included titles such as the album name 'sauce' this name would be something which audiences would pay attention to as our front panel has the album name and the song tile 'TGIF' written down as well as the rappers name 'Chris yonge'
  • Back pannel: this included barcodes, record labels 'Spartan logo' which is presented with a spartan head. These are aspects which audiences will recognise as real record labels are shown in back pannels of song albums
  • inside right pannel: we added an image of a girl (on the graffiti wall) we added this as we noticed that in the digipak example above of 'Drakes album' we can see an image of him smoking which has no text around it which is why we added an image without text so tha audiences will get an idea on what the rapper raps about which is love and girls.
  • Font tile: we have included a continuous font which is used for song title, artists name this font matches the background of the digipak which is a graffiti style background. the design shows the font being worn out which matches the background.
how our digipak challenges conventions of real digipaks:
  • booklet: our booklet area is a slit which has the same logo of the spartain (our production logo) on it this keeps the images being the same and if you take out the booklet the image is still complete. this is something which we found to be different in real digipaks as they normally just have the booklet attached whilst ours has a specific place for it to enter.
  • Social media links: most digipaks include name of rapper however we rarely see rappers showing social media links which is why we added some for instagram and snapchat because the audience would be teens aged 16-24. by adding these links audiences can find the real facebook or instagram pages for our artist which will result in bigger popularity for our unknown rapper.
  • Production logo:   our production logo is enlarged which would catch audiences eye, we enlarged this because our rapper is unknown and with an established production logo we created it will increase awareness and audeinces will interpret the image.
overall we conformed to conventions of rap genre because we have added images of our rapper thoughout the digipak to show audiences that hes the rapper which will allow them to link the name of the rapper shown on front of cover to the image of him. We added all the songs that the rapper has made (chris yonge), his social media links are avialable.
