Evaluation Question 3 (Elrad)

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Throughout the creation of our media products we have included audience feedback consistently in many aspects which shaped our final product. Audience feedback was key in our creation of our magazine advert, digipak and music video and without these constructive criticisms we wouldn't have made our music video turn out the way it did.
Song Choice:

Initial decision:

This is the feedback we got on our idea and from this we can plan more and get  more prepared for filming, additionally with these suggestions we can base our story board on this which will make it easier to include the aspects which our feedback liked. we also have understood some aspects which may be hard to implement e.g. the smoke bomb which is why we should do more research if we can use such prop to enhance our video.
Target Audience:
Here are the responses of some of our main questions........
The most common age was 17 although we did have some 18/19/21 year olds.

The average music videos watched per day by our responses is 5.

The genre we chose to do was Hip Hop/Rap and from our research it seems to be that these two genres are quite popular amongst our targeted audience.

From our research we can conclude that our target audience do feel that there are certain things that should be in a hiphop/rap music video such as; money, girls, trendy clothes, dancing etc. These are features that we have thought about and included some.
Here is our group pitch on our idea and the feedback we received:

this is our group pitch with feedback our camera cut out half way though feedback but i asked and wrote the questions down which i can explain below

Where are you going to use the smoke bomb?
we will use the smoke bomb in a less busy area which first our idea was to use it in a tunnel, but we thought that it might be too busy which means that we thought of a new location which is our members back garden which we will have dancers dancing in the smoke. by using the garden we won't be in public property and we wont be harming anyone.

How are you going to get dancers in the video?
our group member is part of a dance club which means that he has people which are willing to help us out in making this video, and the dancers will be present in the house party scene which means that they will not have to travel far. The dancers are also professional as they are part of a club which means that the video wouldn't be impacted much by poor dancers.

Are we going to include alcohol?
we are including alcohol but we are not showing the direct use of it, we are showing the theoretical view of him holding a bottle but not drinking out of it.

Will we include any lighting?
due to us showing an idea of filming in a tunnel they asked will we include lighting. The tunnel has lighting however we will have two lights with us when we are filming, incase its too dark or incase the lights are not turned on in the tunnel.

Will there be lip syncing or will it be all visual?
we will have shots of lip syncing when the verse 'its friday' is present this will show how the main character/ rapper is glad its friday. We will have scenes where theres dancing where we will not lip sync but the dancing will be in time of the song which means that the visual will not be different to the song/beat.

The song includes swear words:
We do understand that it has swear words, which is why we have changed the lyrics and made a clean version of it which has the idea of the swear word being present but we don't have the real word said. This means we can target our target audience of 16-24yr olds.

Importance of audience feedback on pitch:
it gave us bigger insight on audiences view on what aspects they like e.g. the clothes, locations, and props which we included. we had presented this to audiences varying from 17-40 year olds to see what views and ideas can they help us with to improve the music video. To conclude without audience feedback we wouldn't have experimented with the cameras before hand, we wouldn't have taken in consideration time and when to film in the Waterloo tunnel and we wouldn't have included more than one rapper and location if these were not brought up in audience feedback. so in my opinion they played a key role in the creation of our music video as they shaped and guided us to create a convention of rap genre video.

Animatic Feedback:

  • ''It represents our teen life and its something that i would watch'' this is a quote from when we showed our animatic to our peers they mentioned that it does resemble what happens on a Friday night getting drunk and the excitement of dressing up to go to a party. They enjoyed the visuals we presented and how realistic and familiar it was.
  • We showed an image of a car and one feedback we received gotten is that they probably won't be using cars to get to parties so they said that part is not that needed. we took that comment on board as it might show that we are promoting drunk driving
  • They enjoyed the visuals in terms of the scene where he's getting ready, that scene makes it believable that he's preparing for a party which most teens can relate to which our audience members did
  • The text on the screen makes the video more modern as it really makes the story line flow as audience are able familiarise themselves with what they are viewing.
When we finally created a rough edit of our music video and this is the feedback we received:

By having this audience feedback we realised that there were aspects which had been overlooked during the editing of the video such as the lip sync in some shots of the music video which didn't work well as it may not have been in time, we were so focused on other aspects that we overlooked minor details. Audience feedback at any given stage is important it enables us to learn while we do, to take note of our mistakes earlier on so we can rectify them. For our finished product we focused on these aspects throughout our video so we watched it once and looked at lighting problems, then watched it a second time to look at lip sync problems, and so on.
Final cut audience feedback:

  • Audience response we had gotten back was that they liked the transitions especially the dance move where it switches to different location, that editing involved within this scene was effective in changing the scenes.
  • Use of location made the setting seem real as it was all settings which rap music videos would use e.g. their house, graffiti and roads. they liked the way we edited the locations to swerve in a order of graffiti ,party , rooftop which made the scenes seem smooth.
  • Hair dresser scene made the music video flow, it allowed the shots in the video to be varied as we had mostly fast transitions where as here we slowed them down a bit.
  • Dance in the video created more of an authenticity as the dancer was not self conscious and you could see this through the shots they just danced and had fun which gave an effect of fun in the video.
  • The colours look good  as they seem enhanced which refers back to the conventions of the genre as it seemed like a rap video with bright colours shown. the use of the graffiti (woman) was important as it shows how it links with the song which tied the location, lip sync and lyrics well together as it made it seem as if he was singing about her there and then.

Overall what we learnt form audience feedback:
We learnt that audience feedback can shape and guide us to creating a professional music video, it has aided us in making decisions on our storyboard, location, clothing which made our music video turn out the way it did. I've learnt that audience feedback is essential at every stage  and should be done more often on decisions which can impact the end result of music video. I have  learnt that without the constant referral to the audience we might derail from creating a music video that is especially catered for them, which is why their say in our construction is important as they are the ones we want watching our music video.
