RESEARCH: Digipak Analysis (Anna)

A2:RESEARCH: Digipak analysis

Elements of real Digipaks:

What is a Digipak?:
Digipak offers something more to the audience who buy the CD, e.g. booklets, poster, postcards, lyrics which the audience can have as a memento. The companies do this because the current audiences don't buy hardcover songs they download it instead so by adding such extras in the digipak allows the customers to get more for what they buy.
Front cover:
Front covers normally contain the lead singer or band together standing or an extreme close up to their faces which allows the audience to recognise the person which will allow them to find out about the singers new album/song. The name of the singer/band would be in bold next to the picture for the audience to create a link on who the person is. it occasionally has institution logo to show who they are signed by (their record label). The front cover should eye catching but it can also be simple e.g. the example below (David Guetta) but it can be artsy such as Olly Murs digipak. additionally the whole band can be in the front cover as shown in 'The Scripts Digipak which includes all the members which people may recognise.

Back Cover:
it contains distributors and institutions which have helped to record this album/song, Record labels like syco(Simon Cowells record label company) would be shown which could get the audience to purchase such item. it includes barcodes as the back is not what brings attention to the digipak but the front cover which is why the back cover has more of the information on the legal rights and copyrights. Song list would be present in the back cover with its order of how it will be played when listened to.

This example of the back cover features the lead singer (Ariana Grande) with her song list which stands out from the dark colours it has pink to emphasise the song names. it has rights and names of people who are featured in such songs e.g. Big Sean.

Digipaks also include labels on them if there is parental advisory needed to buy it and its a warning for what songs might be included e.g. swear words or rap about drugs and sex which has to be mentioned on the back cover for the audience to know if its suitable for them

Spine:
it includes the title of album or song name, with the singers/ band name which would be in different fonts or similar fonts to the whole digipak.

The fonts can vary to the title that the band has created e.g. ABBA the font they use is all capital letters and  reversed B which is known by the audience which with that font being used on the spine it allows them to differentiate from other digipaks.
Internal panels:
Inside of a digipak we will see a plastic holder for the Cd itself it can be see-through which reveals another piece of artwork or it can be solid colour.
Booklets:
Booklets include lyrics on the songs featured, it also includes quotes from one of the songs which can make the album memorable it can have stills of the band singing/ playing their instrument. postcards, stills, holographic photos will also be included to give the audience more than just the song.

Justin Biebers Digipak included a poster, and stills from the music video that he had recorded for the
song, it gives personal postcards for the audience to keep.

Digipak templates:

Advantages of Digipak:
  • More eye-catching to the audience as they can get more images found inside.
  • More packaging give the artist more space to promote their product.
Disadvantages of Digipak:
  • its becoming out of date, we download more than buy hardcopies.
  • more expensive than to download so people might not buy

Stores selling Digipaks:
HMV provides CD, Vinyl's, Dvd and digital codes to download songs online. They have shelf's which have variety of songs from old to new.
HMV displays their CD and digipaks in genres of songs e.g. rock and pop which allow the audience to find the album they are looking for. The newest Cd (Digipak) is places at the top row to get the attention of the audience.
